Muğla’nın Yatağan ilçesinde UNESCO Dünya Mirası Geçici Listesi’nde yer alan Stratonikeia Antik Kenti’nin ana caddesi yeni dönemde başlayan kazı çalışmalarıyla ayağa kaldırılıyor.

“Gladyatörler kenti” olarak bilinen ve dünyanın en büyük mermer kentleri arasında gösterilen Stratonikeia’da 1977’de başlayan kazı çalışmaları 12 ay devam ediyor.

Helenistik, Roma, Bizans’ın yanı sıra Menteşe Beyliği, Osmanlı ve Cumhuriyet dönemleri için de önem taşıyan antik kentte her yıl yeni eserler gün yüzüne çıkarılıyor, kentteki tarihi yapılar restore ediliyor.

Stratonikeia Antik Kenti’ndeki yapılar, 3D teknolojisiyle ziyaretçileri zamanda yolculuğa çıkarıyor.

“Geçen yıl 1216 eser bulduk”

Stratonikeia Antik Kenti Kazı Heyeti Başkanı Prof. Dr. Bilal Söğüt, AA muhabirine, tarihi alandaki değişik dönemlerden kalan yapıların bir bütün olarak korunduğunu söyledi.

Geçen yıl verimli bir çalışma dönemi geçirdiklerini belirten Söğüt, “2022’de gün yüzüne çıkardığımız 1216 eseri Muğla Müzesi’ne teslim ettik. Bu yıl yeni başlamış olmamıza rağmen kazılarda 37 esere ulaştık. Özellikle kentte Roma hamamı, batı cadde, meclis binası ve Ağa Konakları’nın olduğu esas şehrin merkezi, ana caddesi diyebileceğimiz alanı kazıyoruz.” diye konuştu.

Söğüt, kent içinde restorasyon çalışmalarının da devam ettiğini, Valilik ve Yatağan Belediyesi ile proje yürüttüklerini dile getirdi.

Antik kentte, Yatağan’ın mahallelerinden gelen kadınlarla çalışmalar yaptıklarına dikkati çeken Söğüt, “Çalışanlarımız genelde kadınlardan oluşuyor. Geçen yıl birlikte çok verimli bir süreç geçirdik. Bu yıl da aynı şekilde alanda çalışmaya devam edeceğiz.” dedi.

“Antik kent ve Yatağan’ın tanıtımı için çaba gösteriyoruz”

Yatağan Belediye Başkanı Mustafa Toksöz de kazı çalışmaları sayesinde birçok insanın hem evine ekmek götürdüğünü hem de tarihi ve kültürel yerlerin daha iyi bir şekilde temizlenip düzenlendiğini kaydetti.

Stratonikeia’nın Muğla’nın en önemli antik kenti olduğuna inandıklarını dile getiren Toksöz, şunları söyledi:

“10-16 Nisan’da Yatağan olarak ilk kez Doğu Akdeniz Uluslararası Turizm ve Seyahat Fuarı EMITT’e katılacağız. Fuarda Valiliğimizin standının girişini Stratonikeia’nın giriş kapısı olarak düzenledik. Gelen turistlerin iyi vakit geçirebileceği, gezeceği, tarihi dokusuyla anlayabileceği bir ortam yaratmaya gayret ettik. Ufak nüanslara da dikkati çektik. Antik kent bir vatandaşın, turistin gelip akşama kadar vakit geçirebileceği, tarihi ve kültürel manada kendini doyurabileceği bir şehir haline geldi.”

Toksöz, antik kent meydanındaki köy kahvehanesini restore ettiklerini, muhtarlık konağının restorasyon çalışmalarının sürdüğünü kaydetti.

The main street of the Ancient City of Stratonikeia, which is located on the UNESCO World Heritage Tentative List in the Yatagan district of Muğla, is being lifted up with the excavation works that have started in the new period.

The excavation works that started in 1977 in Decatonikeia, known as the “city of gladiators” and shown among the largest marble cities in the world, have been continuing for 12 months.

New artifacts are unearthed every year in the ancient city, which is important for the Hellenistic, Roman, Byzantine, as well as the Menteşe Principality, Ottoman and Republican periods, and the historical buildings in the city are restored.

The buildings in the Ancient City of Stratonikeia take visitors on a journey through time with 3D technology.

“We found 1216 works last year”

The Head of the Excavation Committee of the Ancient City of Stratonikeia Prof. Dr. Bilal Söğüt told AA correspondent that the structures remaining from different periods in the historical area are preserved as a whole.

Stating that they had a productive working period last year, Söğüt said, “We delivered 1216 artifacts that we unearthed to the Muğla Museum in 2022. Although we have just started this year, we have reached 37 artifacts during the excavations. Especially in the city, we are excavating the area that we can call the main street, the center of the main city, where there is a Roman bath, a western avenue, the parliament building and Ağa Mansions.” he spoke.

Söğüt stated that restoration works are also continuing in the city and that they are carrying out projects with the Governor’s Office and Yatağan Municipality.

Drawing attention to the fact that they are working with women from the neighborhoods of Yatagan in the ancient city, Söğüt said, “Our employees are usually made up of women. We had a very productive process together last year. We will continue to work in the field in the same way this year.” said.

Yatagan Mayor Mustafa Toksoz also noted that thanks to the excavation works, many people took bread to their homes, and historical and cultural places were cleaned and organized in a better way.

Expressing that they believe that Stratonikeia is the most important ancient city of Muğla, Toksöz said::

“As Yatağan, we will participate in the Eastern Mediterranean International Tourism and Travel Fair EMITT for the first time on April 10-16. We organized the entrance of the stand of our Governorship at the fair as the entrance door of Stratonikeia. We have tried to create an environment where incoming tourists can have a good time, travel, and understand the historical texture. We also drew attention to the small nuances. The ancient city has become a city where a citizen, a tourist can come and spend time until the evening, feed himself in a historical and cultural sense.”

Toksöz noted that they have restored the village coffee shop on the ancient city square, and the restoration work of the mukhtarlik mansion is continuing.
